Nya!

This is a 6th grade student from school this past year. Her name is Nya and she is in our Newcomers program, so she doesn't speak or understand English very well. Here classroom is on the 8th grade floor and located next to me. Nya started coming into my classroom to say "Hi" but more importantly to see the boy she had a crush on. This began our friendship. One day she came into my room after school and one of my students made a comment about me having a baby. She looked at me and I told her that I have a baby in my tummy. She said, "No you don't." I told her yes I do and I have pictures if she would like to see them. She was very excited. When I showed her the pictures she was confused and didn't understand how they were taken. I started to tell her and she goes, "Oh yeah, I saw that on t.v, they do this." and she proceeded to make the movement across her tummy. Since that day she would always come in to say hi to the baby and talk to her.

Nya really wanted to know if the baby was a boy or a girl, so she came into my room after that appointment and here is the conversation:
Nya: "Well, is it boy or girl?"
Me: "We aren't sure, the baby wouldn't move their legs."
Nya: "Why would you want to see the legs move?"
Me with the whole class watching: "That would be the only part that would be different?"
Nya: "Oh, yeah yeah yeah"

Another day Nya come into my classroom asking me what we were going to name the baby and I told her were didn't know. She thought "Nya" would be perfect as it means "beautiful girl". I told her I'd keep it in mind. She also wanted to tell me she was going to be there when the baby is born. I told her that they wouldn't let people in during the delivery hoping she would be done with questions. Nya then asks, "What about your husband? Isn't he going to be there?" I said, "Yeah but just him." and she replied, "And Me, I'm going to be the baby's grandma!" I then said, "If you are the baby's grandma, then that makes you my mom?" She looked at me weird and said, "Don't be silly, I'm not old enough to be your mom!"

Nya really has had such a sheltered life and so few experiences but she has made my pregnancy quite humerus and memorable. She even made the baby a pillow, blanket, and little bag at her after school club. I just wanted to share these stories and get them marked down before I forgot them and hopefully you enjoyed a little laugh.
